North Carolina lawns take a beating from heat, foot traffic, and clay soil that compacts easily. Patchy areas, water runoff, and thin turf often trace back to soil that no longer accepts air, water, or fertilizer at the root zone.
Pine Valley Turf Management provides core aeration and overseeding as part of comprehensive lawn care.
Signs of compacted soil
Watch for thinning brown patches, shallow tree roots, bare spots, puddling in low areas, runoff that will not soak in, soil too hard to dig with a shovel, more insects, and increased grub activity. Standard mowing and watering cannot fix soil that will not accept them.
What core aeration does
Aeration removes small plugs throughout the lawn, creating holes that let fertilizer, water, and air reach roots. It breaks up thatch, improves intake, promotes deeper roots, reduces compaction, limits runoff, and improves drought tolerance.
Best timing in North Carolina
Aerate during active growth—typically once a year or every other year. For tall fescue dominant lawns, fall aeration and overseeding is our primary recommendation. Fall strengthens roots before winter and sets up spring recovery.
Overseeding after aeration
Once aeration opens the profile, overseeding introduces new seed into thin or bare areas. Moist soil before service helps tines penetrate clay. Water consistently afterward so seed establishes.
Individualized lawn plans
Aeration and overseeding stand alone or integrate with fertilization, weed control, and insect management. We tailor plans to each property.
