For gardeners in North Carolina, the growing season is over for the year. However, many people never even planted a garden this year. Not everyone has a green thumb or has the time to grow plants of their own. Thankfully the winter is a great time to practice and get your feet wet. Plant care is a rewarding experience that offers many benefits. Not only do plants add a bit of interest to your space, but they can also increase creativity, reduce stress, clean the air, and boost your overall mood. Here are just some of the easy-to-grow indoor house plants you can use to boost your mood this winter.

Jade Plant

Jade is succulent that retains water in its round leaves. Jade requires little care and can survive more than a month without any water or attention. This is the perfect plant for an office or a person who travels a lot and isn’t home often. Jade will grow to fit any container you put it in and if you do it right, it can live for a very long time.

Yucca

Yucca is a slow-growing houseplant that is also extremely drought tolerant. Although they grow slowly, these plants can take over a room if left to their own devices. Yucca is not a difficult plant to grow. They thrive on negligence and prefer to be ignored for long periods of time. Yucca plants are prone to overwatering. Water on a regular schedule in the spring and summer and sporadically in the winter. Make sure your yucca plant has excellent drainage and is allowed to dry between waterings. Yucca loves in full sunlight or bright indirect light, so place them in a room that gets plenty of light.

Peace Lily

Peace lilies are beautiful plants that are sure to cause people to take notice. They do great in partial shade or under artificial light. They’ll grow just fine in a dark room or across from a window. Plant them in evenly moist, well-drained soil and keep the indoor temperatures above 55 degrees. Peace lilies have a way of telling you when something is wrong. If your peace lily becomes thirsty it will start to droop. If it is receiving too much direct sunlight, its leaves will turn brown.

Bird’s Nest Fern

The Bird’s Nest Fern is a tropical indoor plant that is native to tropical regions of the globe such as southeast Asia, Australia, East Africa, and Hawaii. It has large simple fronds with wavy ripple-edges that drape elegantly over the sides of its container. It loves indirect light and humid environments, perfect for a well-lit bathroom.

ZZ plant

The ZZ plant is another hardy indoor plant that is famous for being able to survive in very low light. It is a tropical perennial plant native to eastern Africa so they are very tolerant to drought. The ZZ plant can brighten up dark rooms that don’t get much sunlight. Only water when the soil is dry to the touch.
